For the Northern European investor who wants to invest in the construction sector, the best opportunities have long been in Spain and with some British contractors such as Balfour Beatty. The recent acquisition of a 23.5 percent stake in Dragados by compatriot ACS gives the already well-performing Spanish construction shares a new impetus. This has to do with the hefty premium that ACS paid for Dragados. This was almost 59 percent above the closing price of the day before the transaction was announced. Despite the high price, a merger of ACS and Dragados appears to yield a more logical product than the just completed takeover of the Dutch construction and dredging company HBG by Dragados. ACS previously stated that it did not want to grow in the mature (Northern) European markets. HBG, with its largest presence in the Netherlands and Germany, therefore does not fit into this picture, and the general expectation is that ACS wants to get rid of HBG as quickly as possible.
