Optus fined S$1.31 million for breaching emergency services public safety regulations
Optus, the Australian subsidiary of Singtel, has been fined A$1.5 million, equivalent to approximately S$1.31 million, for breaching emergency services public safety regulations. The Australian Communications and Media Authority said that an investigation showed that between January 2021 and September 2023, Optus did not upload necessary user information to the emergency services database, putting approximately 200,000 mobile phone users at risk. The database, called the Integrated Public Number Database (IPND), will send emergency messages to users in the event of disasters such as flooding, as well as provide information to local police, fire brigade and ambulance services. Optus is Australia's second largest telecommunications company. Authorities launched the investigation after a serious network failure occurred in Optus last year, affecting more than 10 million Australians.
