The fact that the Bank of Japan, after much hesitation, lowered its reference interest rate by 10 basis points to 0.15 percent made little impression on investors in Japan. On the contrary, the Nikkei-225 closed the week 7.5 percent lower and reached its lowest level in more than 15 years. The broader indices were also hit hard: both Topix and Nikkei-300 ended the week 4.5 percent lower. Not unexpectedly, the hardest hits were again in the technology corner. The rain of profit warnings from American peers left its mark on almost all segments of the electronics sector. Telecom equipment in particular suffered heavily after Motorola's profit warning. Matsushita Communications lost more than 17 percent and Kyocera (-19%) and Murata (-15%) also closed noticeably lower. Producers of semiconductor production equipment also had a hard time: Advantest lost 15 percent and Nikon fell more than 17 percent. Fujitsu, which itself came up with a significant profit adjustment, fell 10 percent.
