Sophos X - Ops Research: New Russian campaign actively abusing Microsoft Teams and remote management tools for data theft and ransomware attacks |
The Sophos X - Ops MDR team discovered two active threat campaigns, each by different threat actor groups abusing the Microsoft Office 365 platform and remote management tools such as Quick Assist to penetrate corporate IT networks. Their goal is to steal corporate data and deploy ransomware. Both attacks are highly active. Sophos MDR has observed more than 15 incidents involving these tactics in the past three months, half of which occurred in the past two weeks. The two threat groups used a similar combination of tactics: Targeting a handful of specific employees in an enterprise using Microsoft Teams and sending thousands of spam emails to those employees in a very short period of time—in one case, More than 3,000 emails were sent in less than an hour (a tactic known as "email bombing") and further contact was made via voice and video calls in Microsoft Teams, claiming to help solve the spam problem.
